Interim Leaf Sustainability Manager

As Interim Leaf Sustainability Manager, Nigel provided 18 months maternity cover reporting to the Head of Leaf Purchasing. This position is embedded within the Global Tobacco Buying Team. Responsibilities within this role included the management of the Leaf Community investment budget, which supports Asian and African tobacco growers with a range of farmer welfare interventions. These included a number of community water-related projects and farmer efficiency improvements through mechanisation and improved tobacco curing infrastructure. The focus of this work was to deliver both commercial and community benefits through a leaf sustainability programme; working with suppliers to capture the ROI of these interventions and building a sustainable tobacco supply chain.

In addition to this, Nigel supported the central Corporate Responsibility (CR) team with a range of reporting responsibilities, including contributions to the DJSI, annual CR report and external assurance programme. He was also responsible for the internal communication of ‘our leaf’ sustainability activities. In addition to the farmer welfare programme this included communicating progress on the industry’s tobacco supplier sustainability programme and Imperial’s African reforestation programme.
